Belhaven University was founded in 1884 as the Belhaven University for Young Ladies. Over the years it merged with two other small colleges and became fully coeducational in 1954. Since 1911 it has maintained ties to the conservative Synod of Living Waters of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and is at once unabashedly Christian and academically ambitious.
