Introduction: Not named for David

In the 1850s Methodist and Quaker families in rural North Carolina founded Union Institute, later known as Trinity College. This became part of the new Duke University when the James Duke family established a $40 million endowment from their tobacco business, but to this day, the largest division of the university is called the Trinity College of Arts and Sciences.
