Gettysburg College was founded in 1832 by the alliteratively named Samuel Simon Schmucker, a Lutheran seminary professor, theologian, and abolitionist. Originally called Pennsylvania College, its first class numbered sixty-three students who studied philosophy, logic, rhetoric, mathematics, science, and classics.
