The University of Connecticut began as the Storrs Agricultural School (named after donors Charles and Augustus Storrs) in 1881. A dozen years after its founding, the Connecticut General Assembly admitted women and designated the university as the state’s land-grant college. The school grew significantly after the world wars as vast numbers of American servicemen entered public universities.
