Biola University has serious ambitions for a school that got its name from an acronym. Founded in 1908 as the Bible Institute of Los Angeles by oil magnate Lyman Stewart, who served as its first president, Biola describes itself modestly as a “Global Center for Christian Thought and Spiritual Renewal.” In 1913, the cornerstone was laid for the Institute’s longtime home in downtown Los Angeles.
