Originally conceived as a school of agriculture, the University of California at Davis was added to the state higher education system in 1905. During World War II, the Davis campus closed, trading ploughshares for swords as young GIs trained on campus. Only after the war did Davis add a liberal arts program, and not until 1960 did the number of non-agriculture students equal the number of agriculture students.
